Dromid Hostel

Hostel and Activity Centre
For Individuals, Families or Groups on the Iveragh Peninsula.

Fáilte go dtí ár suíomh/Welcome to our site. Our hostel offers a year round service to individuals and groups. We are located in the heart of the South Kerry/Iveragh Gaeltacht in the magical unspoiled location of Dromid. Here at Dromid Hostel, we pride ourselves in being able to cater for all visitors, whether travelling solo, with friends, family or even a large group discovering the natural beauty of County Kerry, look no further than Dromid Hostel – a unique location where all are welcome.

Nestled between the valleys and on the banks of the River Inny, the Dromid Hostel/Brú na Dromoda gives it’s guests the most pleasant and thorough hostel experiences that one can hope for. Located in a dark sky reserve, we have much to boast here in terms of views morning or night-time. If the weather is clear, one can enjoy immense star-gazing where we also have access to some wonderful equipment to help facilitate this. Dromid is located in a Gold Tier Reserve which is only one of three in the world.

Our hostel has a tranquil feel but is by no means isolated. In fact, we are located approximately 8-10 minutes from the village of Waterville which boasts a beautiful beach and some lovely restaurants and lively pubs. We are also a mere 15 minute drive from Cahersiveen and Ballinskelligs (home to two wonderful blue flag beaches). This makes Dromid Hostel easily accessible and within short distance of local amenities, despite it’s cosy, country setting.

For the Kerry Way walker, we offer what we call a package approach for these guests. Once you leave the Kerry Way for our hostel, we offer a meals service (confirm by request), a café boasting some amazingly tasting coffee and cakes, and fresh laundry before you settle into one of our restful  beds. We also offer laundry services where possible and have a drying room for those who need it – and with the climate here on the South-West Coast, there is a high possibility that it may be needed! For the walker who is hindered by the rain and needs to come in to us early, we can also accommodate this. We have a relaxed and cosy sitting-room full of games, books and a television to occupy you until check-in time. Along with this, the Inny Tavern  bar is located alongside our hostel, where you can relax by the fire or play some pool while meeting the locals and practicing a few words as Gaeilge. Also located beside this is a little shop where one can purchase some basic provisions for their stay.

Here on the South-West Coast, we are blessed with some of Ireland’s best marked walking trails, as well as hiking and cycling routes. Visitors travel from far and wide to undertake these enriching challenges, inclusive of Cnoc na dTobair, Bray Head and Beentee Loop Walk to name just a few. Our hostel is the ideal location for these enthusiastic climbers. The vast mountainous terrain provides a variety of different landscapes and experiences, giving the walkers a wider appreciation for our wonderful setting. Our in-house staff will kindly offer assistance and guidance about these routes when required.

There are also so many admirable archaeological sites and remains in the locality, from standing stones to ancient monuments, our unique area provides the opportunity to step into history and gives a deep understanding of Ireland’s prominent past. There is a standing stone located near the hostel, which is a popular attraction for historians.

Dromid Hostel is also a wonderful base if one wishes to climb Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntoohil, as we are located about a 25-30 minute drive from one of the commencement points. Indeed, we are also the ideal location for one’s trip to Sceilig Mhichil, as we are approximately a 25 minute drive from Portmagee village.

Located in Gaeltacht Uíbh Ráthaigh in South West Ireland, our hostel is one of the center points for Irish culture and legacy. The Irish language is an enriching treasure and here in Dromid, the unique vernacular is going from strength to strength. Nestled in the midst of the Dromid Gaeltacht, the unmatched experience here in Dromid Hostel is sure to be an unforgettable one.
